Final Draft Backgrounder on Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers, quarterback for the San Diego Chargers and recipient of an impressive number of honors and awards, has become known for his confrontational outbursts during football games, which are rumored to be the result of a drug addiction.

Allegations have been made that his sudden bursts of anger and verbal attacks on players from opposing teams are the result of ongoing drug use. It has even been suggested that he has made poor real estate choices to support his drug habit.
Rivers’ erratic behavior became more evident and publicized than ever before when Rivers took part in a very animated exchange of words and gestures with Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler on December 25, 2007. The incident was caught by ESPN's cameras and clearly shows that Rivers provoked the dispute with no apparent reason—fueling the rumors of his uninhibited drug use.

Rivers was born on December 8, 1981 in Decatur, Alabama and played football at Athens High School. He went on to attend North Carolina State University, where he played football from 2000 to 2003 and set many records and received several awards during his time at North Carolina State University. There is no evidence that he displayed uncontrollable rage or drug use during his time at Athens High School or North Carolina State University.

Despite the recent allegations that Rivers’ controlled substance abuse, there is no solid evidence that these allegations are true. According to federal court records and criminal records, Rivers has not been arrested for any possession charges and there is no proof of his supposed real estate gambles—at least not in San Diego County.
The San Diego County Assessor’s Grantor/Grantee Index indicates that he does not own any property or businesses in San Diego, although he and his wife, Tiffany, currently live in Poway with their three daughters. Tiffany’s Accurint report shows that she has owned property in Decatur, Alabama and Raleigh, North Carolina both before and after she married Philip.
